March Calendar

4:58 PM

Where did time go?
How is it March already?
I feel like time is just slipping through my fingers...

On my Instagram photo of the February calendar I asked if any of you had suggestions for the theme of the March calendar.
One lovely lady suggested flamingos and I really hope I did her idea justice.

I feel like it'll remind us all that summer is right around the corner.
The days are already getting longer here and yes, it's still hella cold, but we've been seeing a lot of the sun lately. That makes up for the freezing cold any day.
(Update: I wrote this last week, and it has recently started snowing here again... Not a big fan. Summer better hurry up.)

I wanted to implement something new in these calendar posts.
I thought it would be fun to let you in on one of my 'big' goals for the month.
Maybe by doing this it will inspire some of you to keep going with your own goals.

For March I really want to focus on self care.
February has been a roller coaster of emotions and I've been feeling a little exhausted by it all:
Mentally, physically, emotionally...
It's been a little heavy.

I want March to be about putting myself first.
Only doing things that I really want to do.
If I don't wanna go to that party? No problem.
Do I feel like eating a whole tub of ice cream? Go for it!
I wanna lie in bed and read and ignore the world? Feel free to do so.

Sometimes being selfish is good.
Sometimes you need to put yourself first.
There is no shame in that, and don't you dare let anyone make you feel guilty for doing so.

Amsterdam

The Amsterdam Trip - Day 3

11:28 AM

Day 3
The Avocado Show
Yes, again.
No shame.
This time: Avocado stuffed with hummus and a bagel.
Need I say more?

The 'Light' Shopping Spree
We may or may not have popped into a couple of stores.
Kiehls, Lush, some cute clothing shop that had the most amazing patches for my green cargo jacket,...
Did we need all the things we bought?
Probably not.
Did we love all of it, though?
Duh.

The Bookshop
Waterstones.
A glorious bookshop in Amsterdam filled with English books.
I swear I only bought one book.
But then...
An hour or so later...
I went back in and bought two more.
Don't take me to bookstores.
Cause I will never leave empty handed.

The Dante Kitchen and Bar

We didn't want lunch.
Not really.
We just wanted some cake and coffee.
So that's what we did.
Coffee and a slice of apple tart to share.
Just lovely.

The Photo's
After 'lunch' we spent the rest of the day walking around aimlessly, taking pictures of each other cause that's what friends do.

The Hotdog
I can't remember what this little place was called.
It was on the same square as the I Amsterdam sign is, just across from the Van Gogh Museum.
Anyway, they had vegetarian hotdogs.
Go get one.

The Return
We slowly made our way back to the hostel, where we had been allowed to leave our luggage for the day.
We had a cup of tea.
Chatted a bit.
Reluctantly left to take the metro one last time.
Once at Central Station we realized that it was already a lot later than we had expected and we might have had to speed walk all the way to our train.
The train that would take us all the way back to reality.

This was by far the most chilled day we'd had but we wouldn't have had it any other way.
I think the key to having a good holiday is this:
Just go with it.
Don't over plan things.
Don't feel like you have to do this or that.
Do what you want.
Eat when you and what you want.
Just go with it.

The Amsterdam Trip - Day 2

Day 2
The Avocado Show
Breakfast : Matcha pancakes and lemon and ginger tea.
It. Was. Delicious.
Worth every cent.

The Tattoo Shops
I've mentioned the idea of my new tattoo in the previous post and before we even left for Amsterdam we had been talking about each getting another one.
Not matching, per se, but something that had the same vibe.
We’d come to the conclusion of getting something floral, irises and sunflowers, naturally Van Gogh inspired. We wanted to take the leap and see if we could find a good walk-in tattoo parlor and just get them done in Amsterdam.
We spent the day going from parlor to parlor, weighing our options.
Eventually we decided it wasn’t meant to be.
(In the mean time I’ve gone to my regular tattoo artist and there are plans for my sunflower. I will be keeping y’all up to date on that, still have some details I need to think about before I take the leap and get it done.)

Late lunch, early dinner.
We  were in the mood for sushi since day 1 so finally just walked in and got some.
Maybe a little more than just 'some'.
It was all you can eat and cheaper to go during lunch time than dinner time.
So in we went.
The interior was breathtaking, they had a fabulous system to avoid food being wasted and the food was delicious.
We tried every vegetarian dish on the menu and let me tell you:
Everything, and I mean everything, was just amazing.
Also, they had some good music playing in there. Some really good tunes.

After lunch we popped into a couple of stores to try on this and that.
Then we came across another tattoo and piercing parlor.
Again, didn’t end up getting a tattoo, but my bestest did get a piercing and I wanted to mention this because the guy that did her piercing was just so damn lovely.
Out of all the places we’d been in that day, that was by far the best.
So if you’re in Amsterdam and feeling adventurous and impulsive, go to Ink Your Skin for a tattoo or piercing.
Cause they just hella nice.

The Boat Ride

You can’t not take a canal cruise. It’s a damn must.
We had gotten our tickets earlier that morning, after breakfast, and we had deliberately chosen for the 5pm boat because we wanted that sunset.
We weren’t disappointed.

We had skipped dinner, seeing that we had had such a late lunch, and went straight to the drinks that night. A cosmo and a moscow mule.
Way better service than at the café of the night before and a lovely interior design.
Instagram worthy, even if I say so myself.

The Pathé
I know it’s probably unusual to go see a movie when away on holiday.
But we were tired. We needed a break.
And they were playing The Post.
You can’t miss out on a movie with Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks can you? Especially if a ticket is only 9 euro when you're a student.
So to the cinema we went.
And it’s a good thing we did too, because it was one fine ass movie.

After that we slowly made our way back to the hostel, showered, packed up some things, and once more, slept like babies.
Tune back in tomorrow for the final day of the trip.

Amsterdam

The Amsterdam Trip - Day 1

2:15 PM

Three days in Amsterdam.
Just me and one of my best friends.
Three days basically revolving around food.
And, honestly, three of the most relaxing days I’ve had in a while.

Day 1

The departure
The alarm went off at 5 am.
Made some tea, got dressed, make up done.
Warm pastries at the station for breakfast.
Read Hollow City by Ransom Riggs on the train.
Arrived in Antwerp station and had another cup of tea.
Then read some more all the way to Amsterdam.

The arrival
First thing was first: metro/tram tickets for three days. Best investment we could’ve made.
First top tip: If you’re thinking of going to Amsterdam, I definitely recommend you get a ticket seeing that it’s valid for the busses, trams and metros. There are ticket machines in and outside of the station so it’s not hard to find.

The hostel
Took a metro, walked a bit and there we were.
Shoutout to the kind man who showed us the way, after that we never had to google the way again.
Second top tip: go to a hostel that’s outside the city center. It's cheaper and save some money where you can, cause Amsterdam is hella expensive.
We got a room in ViaAmsterdam, with six beds.
As it was my first time in a hostel, I was slightly apprehensive but there was no need for that.
It was clean and spacious.
The beds were amazing.
The interior design of the reception and restaurant, called The Dude, was just fabulous.
Couldn’t recommend it more.
We checked in, dropped off our luggage and off we went.

The Van Gogh Museum

The reason we planned the trip in the first place.
My favorite painter.
Not the cheapest museum, but my god was it worth it.
Finally made me decide on my next tattoo: a sunflower.
Needs some more thought and planning, but it’s happening.

                                       The Avocado Show
Lunch.
Important part of the day.
We had googled this restaurant beforehand and just knew we had to go there.
Little did we know we were going to go there Every. Single. Day. With no regrets. Cause love me some avocados.
First day: Nacho’s and pumpkin hummus on toast with an avocado rose.
It was gorgeous.
All the dishes were.
And most important, it was bloody damn delicious.

The Moco Museum
A spur of the moment decision.
There was a Banksy and Lichtenstein exhibition that we couldn’t resist.

The Hard Rock Café
Neither of us had been in a Hard Rock Café.
We went in with the intention of having one drink before heading back to the hostel to get ready for dinner.
After two hours, two very strong cocktails and a lot of judging directed at the very young girls flirting shamelessly with the very old bartender, we finally headed back.

The Bad Pizza
We headed out to dinner quite late and even though I wasn’t in the mood for anything, we ended up in a little pizza restaurant in one of the side streets of the Leidseplein.
Now listen closely, top tip number three: Never, I repeat, never go have dinner in any one of those restaurants. It’s the second time we’ve been to one of those pizza places and both times we were exceptionally disappointed.
Ordered onion rings, a pizza to share and two glasses of water.
The onion rings were good. The pizza cold. The water overpriced.
Just all around nah.

Some wine was needed after our disappointing dinner so wine we got.
Kinda loud, not the best service, but boy oh boy did they have some good wine.
If only we had known that was their sushi night, we would've had dinner there instead of some bad pizza.

And that, was our first day.
We headed back to the hostel, washed up, and slept like a babies.
Tune back in tomorrow for day two.
